What is The Yoga Transition?
Life is a process. A process of transitions from one experience to the next. ‘Entering the stream’ is an old Buddhist adage symbolising a shift in attitude, one of commitment. When we as yoga practitioners decide on this yogic path of practice, we transition from living life on the surface to looking beneath the surface of things. Entering the stream symbolises this transition to a life less ordinary. To one where we are committed to living a life where we can flourish to our full potential, on a personal level and as a member or our community.
The Yoga Transition was set up specifically to help intermediate and advanced yoga teachers progress further, and covers a number of key areas in our guided mentorship program – put together, these elements are known as The Yoga Transition Path:
The Yoga Transition Path
- Authentic holistic yoga – not just the physical component; yoga that develops the practitioner beyond the mat
- Refining your yoga teaching content style beyond the superficial to the subtle
- The science and art of themed and intentional sequencing
- Cueing – the art of observation and intentional language usage
- Teaching without demonstrating; being more interactive in class
- Incorporating meditation into your classes and meditation principles into your asana
- The physiology of breathing and why it is important
- Starting a yoga studio – the business behind the art
- Creating workshops, immersions, retreats
Advancing your personal yoga practice.
Meet master teacher Susan Allen
At the heart of The Yoga Transition is master teacher Susan Allen.
A former mechanical engineer by training and trade, Susan (“Suze”) discovered the art of yoga while travelling through India in the 1990’s, and, like many before her, felt a strong attraction to this transformative practice.
Having practised meditation and mindfulness since a teenager, and always active, Susan was instantly drawn to the blend of the physical and the mental that the yoga practice offered. Her initial yoga teacher training in the Sivananda lineage in Uttarkashi, India, awakened a deep interest in traditional yoga – the philosophical, cultural, and holistic aspects that are the foundations of the practice.
Coupling this spiritual, holistic approach with a technique-driven, biomechanically-minded, scientific and structured methodology, Susan has successfully run yoga studios, online classes, workshops, immersions, and retreats for the last twenty years – in many cases teaching the teachers. Harnessing her practical and technical skillset, Suze understands and teaches yoga pragmatically.
A former student of numerous revered world-class master teachers herself, including yoga therapist and Viniyoga founder Gary Kraftsow, Anusara yoga founder John Friend, and Tibetan Buddhist master Dan Brown, Susan credits her most meaningful growth as a yoga teacher to her time spent with these masters of their craft, and is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study with such knowledgeable, respected yoga practitioners.
Susan has practised yoga in many traditions including Vinyasa, Hatha, Viniyoga, Sivananda, Anusara, Iyengar and Satyananda, together with the Tibetan Buddhist, Vipassana and Insight meditation traditions.
Deeply passionate about helping other teachers cultivate a career path and fulfil their potential on their yoga journey, Susan brings all of this experience to her mentoring.
By creating a safe and collaborative space for personal development, she is able to partner with students to give the guidance and structure professional yoga teachers need – imparting her knowledge in easy to digest modules, which cover a range of both personal and professional growth goals.
The Yoga Transition Path
At The Yoga Transition, we care about the relationships our student teachers have with their students – and, importantly, with themselves.
Most yoga teachers in studios turn up, teach their class, chat to the students and go home; often having no interaction with other teachers. In this model there is no possibility of the collaboration, discussion, innovation, or development that comes when working with peers.
Mentoring with a senior teacher offers an avenue for professional development and true personal growth. We work with our students to ensure that all guidance is relevant to their teaching environment and unique situation, talk through the nuances of running a yoga business, work on their own yoga practice, and teach The Yoga Transition Path – the core elements that give graduates of our mentorship program the skills to become a leader in their yoga community.
